Nola, taking individual time for my kids

Yesterday I took Atreyu out to lunch. It was the first time we did something ust the two of us in way too long, maybe even since Galixy was born. I’d realized while taking Galixy shopping for atreyu’s birthday present(s), that people generally take Atreyu more easily than Galixy and that I’d been bringing Galixy along for stuff left and right while Atreyu’s getting to the age of, “You’ll be back soon anyway, I’d rather keep doing my thing right now.” Since both my kids have been potty trained for years now, I’m unsure of why Atreyu would be easier than Galixy, but here it didn’t even matter to Turtle. Galixy is as old as her eldest, so she fit right in.

Atreyu did just fine while Galixy and I shopped. He’s pretty easy when he’s not blaming me for not letting him onto electronics ALL the time.  Galixy and I had some fun looking for some toys Atreyu might like (I found a book of Pokemons and a sticker book of dinosaurs with names. It’s only 18 days and my big kid will be celebrating birthday!) We picked up groceries and had a burger from McDonalds.

That evening I asked Atreyu if he’d want to go do something fun with me alone the next day. His face lit up so wide. My baby was pleased beyond measure. Obviously I’d asked Turtle first if that was even plausible and she said it was more than plausible and a lovely idea. I brainstormed for a bit whether to go to a museum or a park or show, but most things looked too cool to leave Galixy out of it. I decided on a lunch in the french quarter with an exploratory walk. We gave some other people a ride over to the quarter, parked at the Wall, and walked through the Market hosting a fleamarket. Atreyu picked out aa wood giraffe with a metal tail that’ll hold pictures. He said he wants a pic of Galixy and him hugging for it. Sounds good to me. I found a purse. My purse is fading and the clasp is broken, but I love it too much. Having this one gives me the chance to hopefully clean up my old purse and keep it’s green silky feather print for special occasions.

We strolled to Frank’s restaurant where Atreyu was won over by the raviolis on the menu and I liked the balcony spot we got. So we sat in the sunshine observing muledrawn carriages, slurping water, and enjoying each others company. Atreyu inhaled the ravioli with expertise and I ordered half a muffeletta but only ate a quarter, They’re so big! for those that don’t know a muffeletta is a sandwich with ham, salami, swiss, and an olive salad on a toasted sesame bun. Very good and very Nola.

After eating and chatting we took a stroll along the river, through Jackson square where we saw Mason escapes a straightjacket. Atreyu said the show was too long, but the guy was hillarious. I did get it on video and got permission to post it on youtube as well. We strolled on a bit more and went into a voodoo shop just to check things out. I saw some pendants and rings I would’ve liked, but Atreyu loved looking at the tarot deck selection. We cut back through the fleamarket where I bought some soy based, homemade candles to stock up on my festive candles (garden district, moonlit bayou, and voodoo queen, were the scents that spoke to me most)

Back at the bus, Amzie Adams was taking pictures. He was wearing a top hat and carrying a skull on a staff with a hat on it. He’s an artist selling his wares online: https://AmzieAdams.com for your New Orleans art!

When we returned to the house, my parking spot was blocked by a black SUV and I was forced to park around the corner. Galixy had found a lost item of mine and was so stoked to return it to me. She’d refused to give it to any of the adults and held on to it until I returned. She’d been conversing and arting with the dirty kids who told me left and right how smart and awesome Galixy is.

I did take the kids to bed early last night. I’d been letting them watch a movie starting at 7PM when Turtle starts putting the baby down which resulted in us not going to the bus until 9-930, so last night I grabbed them at 7 and had them watch part of a movie in the bus (until our DVD player died, easy exit for me) Then we listened to The Mark of Athena, a heros of olympus book before falling asleep.

There are so many things to do for kids here, it’s almost a shame we’ve only been wiling around at this place. Almost, because we’re enjoying it here so much. A couple more days and we’ll have another birthday party to attend, and then probably head out of town and onwards.

We shall see! At any rate, I hope you’re grateful. I hope you have some smiles to share.
